*** ANOTHER GREAT ALL-STAR GAME ***

Someone selecting the Charlie Wedemeyer/Silicon Valley Youth Classic football rosters deserves a raise.

The last five All-Star games pitting some of the top June graduates from Santa Clara County have been decided by a touchdown or less. The South has won the last four by a combined 13 points, including an 18-16 decision last year, giving it a 17-12-2 series lead.

Wednesday's 7:30 p.m. game at San Jose City College, the 32nd meeting, figures to be another tight tussle.

South coach Jason Tenner (Leland-San Jose) makes no bones about it: He loves to pound the ball on the ground. North coach Carlos Boles (Prospect-Saratoga) prefers to throw it.

"There's no real secrets (between the two camps)," Boles said.

Boles has two standout quarterbacks, including Arizona State-bound Danny Sullivan (Los Gatos), a second-team All-Metro Area selection by The Chronicle. Sullivan led the area with 2,012 regular-season passing yards and 22 touchdowns. The 6-foot-5, 212-pounder led Los Gatos to a Central Coast Section title.

As good as Sullivan is, Boles will start Rich Scudellari (St. Francis-Mountain View). The 6-3, 205-pounder, headed to Yale, was a first team All-West Catholic Athletic League selection last season.

"He's much better than I thought," Boles said of Scudellari. "I knew he was a good runner, but he can really throw it."

As much as Boles wants to fling it, he will mix in the run because backs Jay Atkins (Homestead-Cupertino), Derome Fowler (Wilcox-Santa Clara), Emmanuel Seelu (Del Mar-San Jose) and Matt Taufoou (St. Francis) have been so impressive.

"These guys need the ball," Boles said. "If they don't get it, I'll look pretty silly."

Tenner, a 49ers practice-squad member in 2000, plans to attack the North's bigger and more athletic defensive line with a deep contingent of backs, including Robert Phillips (Independence-San Jose), Dustin Muhn (Live Oak-Morgan Hill), Shaun Souza (Pioneer-San Jose) and Jerid Ferranti (Oak Grove-San Jose). Fullback Travis Nilmeyer (Valley Christian-San Jose), a 6-foot, 235-pound bruiser, should pave the way.
