Charlie Wedemeyer 1946 - 2010 |
|
Revered football Coach Charlie Wedemeyer, 64, died June 3 after a long battle with Lou Gehrig's disease.
After earning nine varsity letters in high school in Hawaii, Wedemeyer attended Michigan State University and played on the East West Shrine Classic and the Hula Bowl. He and wife Lucy moved to the Bay Area when he took a job as a teacher and football coach at Los Gatos High School. At age 30, he was diagnosed with ALS, he continued to work coaching from a golf cart and play calls through his wife to the field. He brought the team to seven league championships while battling the disease. His indomitable spirit was showcased in the movie "Quiet Victory The Charlie Wedemeyer Story," a PBS documentary "One More Season," and a book he and his wife Lucy wrote, "Charlie's Victory." "It comes with both great sadness and much rejoicing that Charlie has been called home to meet his Heavenly Father," the Almaden Valley Rotary Club wrote on their Web site. 'After a courageous battle, Charlie has succumbed to complications from multiple surgeries and infection." The Rotary hosts the annual Silicon Valley Youth Classic Charlie Wedemeyer High School All-Star Football game yearly that its namesake always attended. The game is in its 36th year and will be held on July 21, 2010 in honor of Charlie Wedemeyer. |
