Mercury News Comments:
Howell was named outstanding defensive player of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division and was a two-way starter for the Wildcats, who recorded six shutouts in 12-0-1 season and shared the Division III title. Howell had 126 tackles; offensively, he rushed for 235 yards in 35 carries and caught nine passes for 272 yards.

Mercury News Comments:
Behind the plate, Howell displayed his arm strength by picking seven runners off third base and six off first base. At the plate, Howell always seemed to find a way to get on base. He not only hit .506 with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs, but he walked 27 times and nine times was hit by a pitch. The Cal-bound Howell had an on-base percentage of .675.
